14 (A)In the daytime he led them with a cloud,
    and all the night with a fiery light.
15 He (B)split rocks in the wilderness
    and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.
16 He made streams come out of (C)the rock
    and caused waters to flow down like rivers.

17 Yet they sinned still more against him,
    (D)rebelling against the Most High in the desert.
18 They (E)tested God in their heart
    by demanding the food they craved.
19 They spoke against God, saying,
    (F)“Can God (G)spread a table in the wilderness?
20 (H)He struck the rock so that water gushed out
    and streams overflowed.
Can he also give bread
    or provide meat for his people?”

21 Therefore, when the Lord heard, he was full of wrath;
    (I)a fire was kindled against Jacob;
    his anger rose against Israel,
22 because they (J)did not believe in God
    and did not trust his saving power.
23 Yet he commanded the skies above
    and (K)opened the doors of heaven,
24 and he (L)rained down on them manna to eat
    and gave them (M)the grain of heaven.
25 Man ate of the bread of (N)the angels;
    he sent them food (O)in abundance.
26 He (P)caused the east wind to blow in the heavens,
    and by his power he led out the south wind;
27 he rained meat on them like (Q)dust,
    winged birds like (R)the sand of the seas;
28 he (S)let them fall in the midst of their camp,
    all around their dwellings.
29 And they (T)ate and were well filled,
    for he gave them what they (U)craved.
30 But before they had satisfied their craving,
    (V)while the food was still in their mouths,
31 the anger of God rose against them,
    and he killed (W)the strongest of them
    and laid low (X)the young men of Israel.

32 In spite of all this, they (Y)still sinned;
    (Z)despite his wonders, they did not believe.
33 So he made (AA)their days (AB)vanish like[a] a breath,[b]
    and their years in terror.
34 When he killed them, they (AC)sought him;
    they repented and sought God earnestly.
35 They remembered that God was their (AD)rock,
    the Most High God their (AE)redeemer.
36 But they (AF)flattered him with their mouths;
    they (AG)lied to him with their tongues.
37 Their (AH)heart was not (AI)steadfast toward him;
    they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he, being (AJ)compassionate,
    (AK)atoned for their iniquity
    and did not destroy them;
he restrained his anger often
    and did not stir up all his wrath.
39 He (AL)remembered that they were but (AM)flesh,
    (AN)a wind that passes and comes not again.
40 How often they (AO)rebelled against him in the wilderness
    and (AP)grieved him in (AQ)the desert!

14 He guided them with the cloud by day
    and with light from the fire all night.(A)
15 He split the rocks(B) in the wilderness
    and gave them water as abundant as the seas;
16 he brought streams out of a rocky crag
    and made water flow down like rivers.

17 But they continued to sin(C) against him,
    rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.
18 They willfully put God to the test(D)
    by demanding the food they craved.(E)
19 They spoke against God;(F)
    they said, “Can God really
    spread a table in the wilderness?
20 True, he struck the rock,
    and water gushed out,(G)
    streams flowed abundantly,
but can he also give us bread?
    Can he supply meat(H) for his people?”
21 When the Lord heard them, he was furious;
    his fire broke out(I) against Jacob,
    and his wrath rose against Israel,
22 for they did not believe in God
    or trust(J) in his deliverance.
23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above
    and opened the doors of the heavens;(K)
24 he rained down manna(L) for the people to eat,
    he gave them the grain of heaven.
25 Human beings ate the bread of angels;
    he sent them all the food they could eat.
26 He let loose the east wind(M) from the heavens
    and by his power made the south wind blow.
27 He rained meat down on them like dust,
    birds(N) like sand on the seashore.
28 He made them come down inside their camp,
    all around their tents.
29 They ate till they were gorged—(O)
    he had given them what they craved.
30 But before they turned from what they craved,
    even while the food was still in their mouths,(P)
31 God’s anger rose against them;
    he put to death the sturdiest(Q) among them,
    cutting down the young men of Israel.

32 In spite of all this, they kept on sinning;(R)
    in spite of his wonders,(S) they did not believe.(T)
33 So he ended their days in futility(U)
    and their years in terror.
34 Whenever God slew them, they would seek(V) him;
    they eagerly turned to him again.
35 They remembered that God was their Rock,(W)
    that God Most High was their Redeemer.(X)
36 But then they would flatter him with their mouths,(Y)
    lying to him with their tongues;
37 their hearts were not loyal(Z) to him,
    they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he was merciful;(AA)
    he forgave(AB) their iniquities(AC)
    and did not destroy them.
Time after time he restrained his anger(AD)
    and did not stir up his full wrath.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh,(AE)
    a passing breeze(AF) that does not return.

40 How often they rebelled(AG) against him in the wilderness(AH)
    and grieved him(AI) in the wasteland!

14 In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.

15 He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.

16 He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.

17 And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.

18 And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.

19 Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?

20 Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

21 Therefore the Lord heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;

22 Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:

23 Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,

24 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.

25 Man did eat angels' food: he sent them meat to the full.

26 He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.

27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:

28 And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.

29 So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;

30 They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,

31 The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.

32 For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.

33 Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.

34 When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.

35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.

36 Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.

37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.

38 But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.

39 For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.

40 How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!
