1 Apocalypsis Jesu Christi, quam dedit illi Deus palam facere servis suis, quae oportet fieri cito: et significavit, mittens per angelum suum servo suo Joanni,
2 qui testimonium perhibuit verbo Dei, et testimonium Jesu Christi, quaecumque vidit.
3 Beatus qui legit, et audit verba prophetiae hujus, et servat ea, quae in ea scripta sunt: tempus enim prope est.
4 Joannes septem ecclesiis, quae sunt in Asia. Gratia vobis, et pax ab eo, qui est, et qui erat, et qui venturus est: et a septem spiritibus qui in conspectu throni ejus sunt:
5 et a Jesu Christo, qui est testis fidelis, primogenitus mortuorum, et princeps regum terrae, qui dilexit nos, et lavit nos a peccatis nostris in sanguine suo,
6 et fecit nos regnum, et sacerdotes Deo et Patri suo: ipsi gloria et imperium in saecula saeculorum. Amen.
7 Ecce venit cum nubibus, et videbit eum omnis oculus, et qui eum pupugerunt. Et plangent se super eum omnes tribus terrae. Etiam: amen.
8 Ego sum alpha et omega, principium et finis, dicit Dominus Deus: qui est, et qui erat, et qui venturus est, omnipotens.
9 Ego Joannes frater vester, et particeps in tribulatione, et regno, et patientia in Christo Jesu: fui in insula, quae appellatur Patmos, propter verbum Dei, et testimonium Jesu:
10 fui in spiritu in Dominica die, et audivi post me vocem magnam tamquam tubae,
11 dicentis: Quod vides, scribe in libro: et mitte septem ecclesiis, quae sunt in Asia, Epheso, et Smyrnae, et Pergamo, et Thyatirae, et Sardis, et Philadelphiae, et Laodiciae.
12 Et conversus sum ut viderem vocem, quae loquebatur mecum: et conversus vidi septem candelabra aurea:
13 et in medio septem candelabrorum aureorum, similem Filio hominis vestitum podere, et praecinctum ad mamillas zona aurea:
14 caput autem ejus, et capilli erant candidi tamquam lana alba, et tamquam nix, et oculi ejus tamquam flamma ignis:
15 et pedes ejus similes auricalco, sicut in camino ardenti, et vox illius tamquam vox aquarum multarum:
16 et habebat in dextera sua stellas septem: et de ore ejus gladius utraque parte acutus exibat: et facies ejus sicut sol lucet in virtute sua.
17 Et cum vidissem eum, cecidi ad pedes ejus tamquam mortuus. Et posuit dexteram suam super me, dicens: Noli timere: ego sum primus, et novissimus,
18 et vivus, et fui mortuus, et ecce sum vivens in saecula saeculorum: et habeo claves mortis, et inferni.
19 Scribe ergo quae vidisti, et quae sunt, et quae oportet fieri post haec.
20 Sacramentum septem stellarum, quas vidisti in dextera mea, et septem candelabra aurea: septem stellae, angeli sunt septem ecclesiarum: et candelabra septem, septem ecclesiae sunt.
2 Angelo Ephesi ecclesiae scribe: Haec dicit, qui tenet septem stellas in dextera sua, qui ambulat in medio septem candelabrorum aureorum:
2 Scio opera tua, et laborem, et patientiam tuam, et quia non potes sustinere malos: et tentasti eos, qui se dicunt apostolos esse, et non sunt: et invenisti eos mendaces:
3 et patientiam habes, et sustinuisti propter nomen meum, et non defecisti.
4 Sed habeo adversum te, quod caritatem tuam primam reliquisti.
5 Memor esto itaque unde excideris: et age poenitentiam, et prima opera fac: sin autem, venio tibi, et movebo candelabrum tuum de loco suo, nisi poenitentiam egeris.
6 Sed hoc habes, quia odisti facta Nicolaitarum, quae et ego odi.
7 Qui habet aurem, audiat quid Spiritus dicat ecclesiis: Vincenti dabo edere de ligno vitae, quod est in paradiso Dei mei.
8 Et angelo Smyrnae ecclesiae scribe: Haec dicit primus, et novissimus, qui fuit mortuus, et vivit:
9 Scio tribulationem tuam, et paupertatem tuam, sed dives es: et blasphemaris ab his, qui se dicunt Judaeos esse, et non sunt, sed sunt synagoga Satanae.
10 Nihil horum timeas quae passurus es. Ecce missurus est diabolus aliquos ex vobis in carcerem ut tentemini: et habebitis tribulationem diebus decem. Esto fidelis usque ad mortem, et dabo tibi coronam vitae.
11 Qui habet aurem, audiat quid Spiritus dicat ecclesiis: Qui vicerit, non laedetur a morte secunda.
12 Et angelo Pergami ecclesiae scribe: Haec dicit qui habet rhomphaeam utraque parte acutam:
13 Scio ubi habitas, ubi sedes est Satanae: et tenes nomen meum, et non negasti fidem meam. Et in diebus illis Antipas testis meus fidelis, qui occisus est apud vos ubi Satanas habitat.
14 Sed habeo adversus te pauca: quia habes illic tenentes doctrinam Balaam, qui docebat Balac mittere scandalum coram filiis Israel, edere, et fornicari:
15 ita habes et tu tenentes doctrinam Nicolaitarum.
16 Similiter poenitentiam age: si quominus veniam tibi cito, et pugnabo cum illis in gladio oris mei.
17 Qui habet aurem, audiat quid Spiritus dicat ecclesiis: Vincenti dabo manna absconditum, et dabo illi calculum candidum: et in calculo nomen novum scriptum, quod nemo scit, nisi qui accipit.
18 Et angelo Thyatirae ecclesiae scribe: Haec dicit Filius Dei, qui habet oculos tamquam flammam ignis, et pedes ejus similes auricalco:
19 Novi opera tua, et fidem, et caritatem tuam, et ministerium, et patientiam tuam, et opera tua novissima plura prioribus.
20 Sed habeo adversus te pauca: quia permittis mulierem Jezabel, quae se dicit propheten, docere, et seducere servos meos, fornicari, et manducare de idolothytis.
21 Et dedi illi tempus ut poenitentiam ageret: et non vult poenitere a fornicatione sua.
22 Ecce mittam eam in lectum: et qui moechantur cum ea, in tribulatione maxima erunt, nisi poenitentiam ab operibus suis egerint.
23 Et filios ejus interficiam in morte, et scient omnes ecclesiae, quia ego sum scrutans renes, et corda: et dabo unicuique vestrum secundum opera sua. Vobis autem dico,
24 et ceteris qui Thyatirae estis: quicumque non habent doctrinam hanc, et qui non cognoverunt altitudines Satanae, quemadmodum dicunt, non mittam super vos aliud pondus:
25 tamen id quod habetis, tenete donec veniam.
26 Et qui vicerit, et custodierit usque in finem opera mea, dabo illi potestatem super gentes,
27 et reget eas in virga ferrea, et tamquam vas figuli confringentur,
28 sicut et ego accepi a Patre meo: et dabo illi stellam matutinam.
29 Qui habet aurem, audiat quid Spiritus dicat ecclesiis.
3 Et angelo ecclesiae Sardis scribe: Haec dicit qui habet septem spiritus Dei, et septem stellas: Scio opera tua, quia nomen habes quod vivas, et mortuus es.
2 Esto vigilans, et confirma cetera, quae moritura erant. Non enim invenio opera tua plena coram Deo meo.
3 In mente ergo habe qualiter acceperis, et audieris, et serva, et poenitentiam age. Si ergo non vigilaveris, veniam ad te tamquam fur et nescies qua hora veniam ad te.
4 Sed habes pauca nomina in Sardis qui non inquinaverunt vestimenta sua: et ambulabunt mecum in albis, quia digni sunt.
5 Qui vicerit, sic vestietur vestimentis albis, et non delebo nomen ejus de libro vitae, et confitebor nomen ejus coram Patre meo, et coram angelis ejus.
6 Qui habet aurem, audiat quid Spiritus dicat ecclesiis.
7 Et angelo Philadelphiae ecclesiae scribe: Haec dicit Sanctus et Verus, qui habet clavem David: qui aperit, et nemo claudit: claudit, et nemo aperit:
8 Scio opera tua. Ecce dedi coram te ostium apertum, quod nemo potest claudere: quia modicam habes virtutem, et servasti verbum meum, et non negasti nomen meum.
9 Ecce dabo de synagoga Satanae, qui dicunt se Judaeos esse, et non sunt, sed mentiuntur: ecce faciam illos ut veniant, et adorent ante pedes tuos: et scient quia ego dilexi te,
10 quoniam servasti verbum patientiae meae, et ego servabo te ab hora tentationis, quae ventura est in orbem universum tentare habitantes in terra.
11 Ecce venio cito: tene quod habes, ut nemo accipiat coronam tuam.
12 Qui vicerit, faciam illum columnam in templo Dei mei, et foras non egredietur amplius: et scribam super eum nomen Dei mei, et nomen civitatis Dei mei novae Jerusalem, quae descendit de caelo a Deo meo, et nomen meum novum.
13 Qui habet aurem, audiat quid Spiritus dicat ecclesiis.
14 Et angelo Laodiciae ecclesiae scribe: Haec dicit: Amen, testis fidelis et verus, qui est principium creaturae Dei.
15 Scio opera tua: quia neque frigidus es, neque calidus: utinam frigidus esses, aut calidus:
16 sed quia tepidus es, et nec frigidus, nec calidus, incipiam te evomere ex ore meo:
17 quia dicis: Quod dives sum, et locupletatus, et nullius egeo: et nescis quia tu es miser, et miserabilis, et pauper, et caecus, et nudus.
18 Suadeo tibi emere a me aurum ignitum probatum, ut locuples fias, et vestimentis albis induaris, et non appareat confusio nuditatis tuae, et collyrio inunge oculos tuos ut videas.
19 Ego quos amo, arguo, et castigo. AEmulare ergo, et poenitentiam age.
20 Ecce sto ad ostium, et pulso: si quis audierit vocem meam, et aperuerit mihi januam, intrabo ad illum, et coenabo cum illo, et ipse mecum.
21 Qui vicerit, dabo ei sedere mecum in throno meo: sicut et ego vici, et sedi cum Patre meo in throno ejus.
22 Qui habet aurem, audiat quid Spiritus dicat ecclesiis.
4 Post haec vidi: et ecce ostium apertum in caelo, et vox prima, quam audivi tamquam tubae loquentis mecum, dicens: Ascende huc, et ostendam tibi quae oportet fieri post haec.
2 Et statim fui in spiritu: et ecce sedes posita erat in caelo, et supra sedem sedens.
3 Et qui sedebat similis erat aspectui lapidis jaspidis, et sardinis: et iris erat in circuitu sedis similis visioni smaragdinae.
4 Et in circuitu sedis sedilia viginti quatuor: et super thronos viginti quatuor seniores sedentes, circumamicti vestimentis albis, et in capitibus eorum coronae aureae.
5 Et de throno procedebant fulgura, et voces, et tonitrua: et septem lampades ardentes ante thronum, qui sunt septem spiritus Dei.
6 Et in conspectu sedis tamquam mare vitreum simile crystallo: et in medio sedis, et in circuitu sedis quatuor animalia plena oculis ante et retro.
7 Et animal primum simile leoni, et secundum animal simile vitulo, et tertium animal habens faciem quasi hominis, et quartum animal simile aquilae volanti.
8 Et quatuor animalia, singula eorum habebant alas senas: et in circuitu, et intus plena sunt oculis: et requiem non habebant die ac nocte, dicentia: Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus omnipotens, qui erat, et qui est, et qui venturus est.
9 Et cum darent illa animalia gloriam, et honorem, et benedictionem sedenti super thronum, viventi in saecula saeculorum,
10 procidebant viginti quatuor seniores ante sedentem in throno, et adorabant viventem in saecula saeculorum, et mittebant coronas suas ante thronum, dicentes:
11 Dignus es Domine Deus noster accipere gloriam, et honorem, et virtutem: quia tu creasti omnia, et propter voluntatem tuam erant, et creata sunt.
5 Et vidi in dextera sedentis supra thronum, librum scriptum intus et foris, signatum sigillis septem.
2 Et vidi angelum fortem, praedicantem voce magna: Quis est dignus aperire librum, et solvere signacula ejus?
3 Et nemo poterat neque in caelo, neque in terra, neque subtus terram aperire librum, neque respicere illum.
4 Et ego flebam multum, quoniam nemo dignus inventus est aperire librum, nec videre eum.
5 Et unus de senioribus dixit mihi: Ne fleveris: ecce vicit leo de tribu Juda, radix David, aperire librum, et solvere septem signacula ejus.
6 Et vidi: et ecce in medio throni et quatuor animalium, et in medio seniorum, Agnum stantem tamquam occisum, habentem cornua septem, et oculos septem: qui sunt septem spiritus Dei, missi in omnem terram.
7 Et venit: et accepit de dextera sedentis in throno librum.
8 Et cum aperuisset librum, quatuor animalia, et viginti quatuor seniores ceciderunt coram Agno, habentes singuli citharas, et phialas aureas plenas odoramentorum, quae sunt orationes sanctorum:
9 et cantabant canticum novum, dicentes: Dignus es, Domine, accipere librum, et aperire signacula ejus: quoniam occisus es, et redemisti nos Deo in sanguine tuo ex omni tribu, et lingua, et populo, et natione:
10 et fecisti nos Deo nostro regnum, et sacerdotes: et regnabimus super terram.
11 Et vidi, et audivi vocem angelorum multorum in circuitu throni, et animalium, et seniorum: et erat numerus eorum millia millium,
12 dicentium voce magna: Dignus est Agnus, qui occisus est, accipere virtutem, et divinitatem, et sapientiam, et fortitudinem, et honorem, et gloriam, et benedictionem.
13 Et omnem creaturam, quae in caelo est, et super terram, et sub terra, et quae sunt in mari, et quae in eo: omnes audivi dicentes: Sedenti in throno, et Agno, benedictio et honor, et gloria, et potestas in saecula saeculorum.
14 Et quatuor animalia dicebant: Amen. Et viginti quatuor seniores ceciderunt in facies suas: et adoraverunt viventem in saecula saeculorum.

Prologue
1 The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave(A) him to show his servants what must soon take place.(B) He made it known by sending his angel(C) to his servant John,(D) 2 who testifies to everything he saw—that is, the word of God(E) and the testimony of Jesus Christ.(F) 3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it,(G) because the time is near.(H)
Greetings and Doxology
4 John,
To the seven churches(I) in the province of Asia:
Grace and peace to you(J) from him who is, and who was, and who is to come,(K) and from the seven spirits[a](L) before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness,(M) the firstborn from the dead,(N) and the ruler of the kings of the earth.(O)
To him who loves us(P) and has freed us from our sins by his blood,(Q) 6 and has made us to be a kingdom and priests(R) to serve his God and Father(S)—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.(T)
7 “Look, he is coming with the clouds,”[b](U)
and “every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him”;(V)
and all peoples on earth “will mourn(W) because of him.”[c]
So shall it be! Amen.
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,”(X) says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come,(Y) the Almighty.”(Z)
John’s Vision of Christ
9 I, John,(AA) your brother and companion in the suffering(AB) and kingdom(AC) and patient endurance(AD) that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God(AE) and the testimony of Jesus.(AF) 10 On the Lord’s Day(AG) I was in the Spirit,(AH) and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,(AI) 11 which said: “Write on a scroll what you see(AJ) and send it to the seven churches:(AK) to Ephesus,(AL) Smyrna,(AM) Pergamum,(AN) Thyatira,(AO) Sardis,(AP) Philadelphia(AQ) and Laodicea.”(AR)
12 I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands,(AS) 13 and among the lampstands(AT) was someone like a son of man,[d](AU) dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet(AV) and with a golden sash around his chest.(AW) 14 The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire.(AX) 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace,(AY) and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters.(AZ) 16 In his right hand he held seven stars,(BA) and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword.(BB) His face was like the sun(BC) shining in all its brilliance.
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet(BD) as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me(BE) and said: “Do not be afraid.(BF) I am the First and the Last.(BG) 18 I am the Living One; I was dead,(BH) and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!(BI) And I hold the keys of death and Hades.(BJ)
19 “Write, therefore, what you have seen,(BK) what is now and what will take place later. 20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand(BL) and of the seven golden lampstands(BM) is this: The seven stars are the angels[e] of the seven churches,(BN) and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.(BO)
To the Church in Ephesus
2 “To the angel[f] of the church in Ephesus(BP) write:
These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand(BQ) and walks among the seven golden lampstands.(BR) 2 I know your deeds,(BS) your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested(BT) those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.(BU) 3 You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name,(BV) and have not grown weary.
4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.(BW) 5 Consider how far you have fallen! Repent(BX) and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand(BY) from its place. 6 But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans,(BZ) which I also hate.
7 Whoever has ears, let them hear(CA) what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious,(CB) I will give the right to eat from the tree of life,(CC) which is in the paradise(CD) of God.
To the Church in Smyrna
8 “To the angel of the church in Smyrna(CE) write:
These are the words of him who is the First and the Last,(CF) who died and came to life again.(CG) 9 I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich!(CH) I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not,(CI) but are a synagogue of Satan.(CJ) 10 Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you,(CK) and you will suffer persecution for ten days.(CL) Be faithful,(CM) even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.(CN)
11 Whoever has ears, let them hear(CO) what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.(CP)
To the Church in Pergamum
12 “To the angel of the church in Pergamum(CQ) write:
These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword.(CR) 13 I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me,(CS) not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness,(CT) who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.(CU)
14 Nevertheless, I have a few things against you:(CV) There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam,(CW) who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols(CX) and committed sexual immorality.(CY) 15 Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.(CZ) 16 Repent(DA) therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.(DB)
17 Whoever has ears, let them hear(DC) what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious,(DD) I will give some of the hidden manna.(DE) I will also give that person a white stone with a new name(DF) written on it, known only to the one who receives it.(DG)
To the Church in Thyatira
18 “To the angel of the church in Thyatira(DH) write:
These are the words of the Son of God,(DI) whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze.(DJ) 19 I know your deeds,(DK) your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.
20 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel,(DL) who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.(DM) 21 I have given her time(DN) to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling.(DO) 22 So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery(DP) with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. 23 I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds,(DQ) and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.(DR)
24 Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you,(DS) 25 except to hold on to what you have(DT) until I come.’(DU)
26 To the one who is victorious(DV) and does my will to the end,(DW) I will give authority over the nations(DX)— 27 that one ‘will rule them with an iron scepter(DY) and will dash them to pieces like pottery’[g](DZ)—just as I have received authority from my Father. 28 I will also give that one the morning star.(EA) 29 Whoever has ears, let them hear(EB) what the Spirit says to the churches.
To the Church in Sardis
3 “To the angel[h] of the church in Sardis(EC) write:
These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits[i](ED) of God and the seven stars.(EE) I know your deeds;(EF) you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.(EG) 2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. 3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent.(EH) But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief,(EI) and you will not know at what time(EJ) I will come to you.
4 Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes.(EK) They will walk with me, dressed in white,(EL) for they are worthy. 5 The one who is victorious(EM) will, like them, be dressed in white.(EN) I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life,(EO) but will acknowledge that name before my Father(EP) and his angels. 6 Whoever has ears, let them hear(EQ) what the Spirit says to the churches.
To the Church in Philadelphia
7 “To the angel of the church in Philadelphia(ER) write:
These are the words of him who is holy(ES) and true,(ET) who holds the key of David.(EU) What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. 8 I know your deeds.(EV) See, I have placed before you an open door(EW) that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.(EX) 9 I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan,(EY) who claim to be Jews though they are not,(EZ) but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet(FA) and acknowledge that I have loved you.(FB) 10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you(FC) from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world(FD) to test(FE) the inhabitants of the earth.(FF)
11 I am coming soon.(FG) Hold on to what you have,(FH) so that no one will take your crown.(FI) 12 The one who is victorious(FJ) I will make a pillar(FK) in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God(FL) and the name of the city of my God,(FM) the new Jerusalem,(FN) which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name. 13 Whoever has ears, let them hear(FO) what the Spirit says to the churches.
To the Church in Laodicea
14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea(FP) write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness,(FQ) the ruler of God’s creation.(FR) 15 I know your deeds,(FS) that you are neither cold nor hot.(FT) I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’(FU) But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.(FV) 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire,(FW) so you can become rich; and white clothes(FX) to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness;(FY) and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline.(FZ) So be earnest and repent.(GA) 20 Here I am! I stand at the door(GB) and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door,(GC) I will come in(GD) and eat with that person, and they with me.
21 To the one who is victorious,(GE) I will give the right to sit with me on my throne,(GF) just as I was victorious(GG) and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Whoever has ears, let them hear(GH) what the Spirit says to the churches.”
The Throne in Heaven
4 After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open(GI) in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet(GJ) said, “Come up here,(GK) and I will show you what must take place after this.”(GL) 2 At once I was in the Spirit,(GM) and there before me was a throne in heaven(GN) with someone sitting on it. 3 And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper(GO) and ruby.(GP) A rainbow(GQ) that shone like an emerald(GR) encircled the throne. 4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders.(GS) They were dressed in white(GT) and had crowns of gold on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder.(GU) In front of the throne, seven lamps(GV) were blazing. These are the seven spirits[j](GW) of God. 6 Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass,(GX) clear as crystal.
In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures,(GY) and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back.(GZ) 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.(HA) 8 Each of the four living creatures(HB) had six wings(HC) and was covered with eyes all around,(HD) even under its wings. Day and night(HE) they never stop saying:
9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne(HH) and who lives for ever and ever,(HI) 10 the twenty-four elders(HJ) fall down before him(HK) who sits on the throne(HL) and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:
11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,(HM)
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
and have their being.”(HN)
The Scroll and the Lamb
5 Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne(HO) a scroll with writing on both sides(HP) and sealed(HQ) with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel(HR) proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion(HS) of the tribe of Judah,(HT) the Root of David,(HU) has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
6 Then I saw a Lamb,(HV) looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures(HW) and the elders.(HX) The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes,(HY) which are the seven spirits[l](HZ) of God sent out into all the earth. 7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne.(IA) 8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures(IB) and the twenty-four elders(IC) fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp(ID) and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers(IE) of God’s people. 9 And they sang a new song, saying:(IF)
“You are worthy(IG) to take the scroll
and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood(IH) you purchased(II) for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.(IJ)
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests(IK) to serve our God,
and they will reign[m] on the earth.”(IL)
11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand.(IM) They encircled the throne and the living creatures(IN) and the elders.(IO) 12 In a loud voice they were saying:
“Worthy is the Lamb,(IP) who was slain,(IQ)
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”(IR)
13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth(IS) and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:
“To him who sits on the throne(IT) and to the Lamb(IU)
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”(IV)
14 The four living creatures(IW) said, “Amen,”(IX) and the elders(IY) fell down and worshiped.(IZ)
