3 For what does the scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness. 4 To him who works, the reward is not reckoned from favour, but as his due. 5 To him who does not work, but believes on him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

3 What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”[a](A)
4 Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift(B) but as an obligation. 5 However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.(C)
