⁶ Abram traveled through the land^(A) as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh^(B) at Shechem.^(C) At that time the Canaanites^(D) were in the land.

⁷ The Lord appeared to Abram^(A) and said, “To your offspring^[a] I will give this land.^(B)”^(C) So he built an altar there to the Lord,^(D) who had appeared to him.

¹⁵ You, however, will go to your ancestors^(A) in peace and be buried at a good old age.^{(B) 16} In the fourth generation^(C) your descendants will come back here,^(D) for the sin of the Amorites^(E) has not yet reached its full measure.”

¹⁷ When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch^(F) appeared and passed between the pieces.^{(G) 18} On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram^(H) and said, “To your descendants I give this land,^(I) from the Wadi^[a] of Egypt^(J) to the great river, the Euphrates^(K)— ¹⁹ the land of the Kenites,^(L) Kenizzites, Kadmonites, ²⁰ Hittites,^(M) Perizzites,^(N) Rephaites,^{(O) 21} Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”^(P)

⁴ “As for me, this is my covenant with you:^(A) You will be the father of many nations.^{(B) 5} No longer will you be called Abram^[a]; your name will be Abraham,^[b](C) for I have made you a father of many nations.^{(D) 6} I will make you very fruitful;^(E) I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.^{(F) 7} I will establish my covenant^(G) as an everlasting covenant^(H) between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God^(I) and the God of your descendants after you.^{(J) 8} The whole land of Canaan,^(K) where you now reside as a foreigner,^(L) I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you;^(M) and I will be their God.^(N)”

¹⁸ Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation,^(A) and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.^[a]
