The True Vine
15 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 (A)Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He [a]takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear (B)more fruit. 3 (C)You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 (D)Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much (E)fruit; for without Me you can do (F)nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, (G)he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words (H)abide in you, (I)you[b] will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 (J)By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; (K)so you will be My disciples.
Love and Joy Perfected
9 “As the Father (L)loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 10 (M)If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and (N)that your joy may be full. 12 (O)This is My (P)commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 (Q)Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. 14 (R)You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, (S)for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 (T)You did not choose Me, but I chose you and (U)appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father (V)in My name He may give you. 17 These things I command you, that you love one another.
The World’s Hatred
18 (W)“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 (X)If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet (Y)because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, (Z)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. (AA)If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But (AB)all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 (AC)If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, (AD)but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (AE)He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them (AF)the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have (AG)seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, (AH)‘They hated Me without a cause.’
The Coming Rejection
26 (AI)“But when the [c]Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, (AJ)He will testify of Me. 27 And (AK)you also will bear witness, because (AL)you have been with Me from the beginning.
Jesus Warns and Comforts His Disciples
16 “These things I have spoken to you, that you (AM)should not be made to stumble. 2 (AN)They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming (AO)that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. 3 And (AP)these things they will do [d]to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. 4 But these things I have told you, that when [e]the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.
“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
The Work of the Holy Spirit
5 “But now I (AQ)go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, (AR)sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but (AS)if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has (AT)come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 (AU)of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 (AV)of righteousness, (AW)because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 (AX)of judgment, because (AY)the ruler of this world is judged.
12 “I still have many things to say to you, (AZ)but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, (BA)the Spirit of truth, has come, (BB)He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 (BC)He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 (BD)All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He [f]will take of Mine and declare it to you.
Sorrow Will Turn to Joy
16 “A (BE)little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, (BF)because I go to the Father.”
17 Then some of His disciples said among themselves, “What is this that He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 18 They said therefore, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not [g]know what He is saying.”
19 Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and (BG)lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into (BH)joy. 21 (BI)A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and (BJ)your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.
23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. (BK)Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, (BL)that your joy may be (BM)full.
Jesus Christ Has Overcome the World
25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you (BN)plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; 27 (BO)for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and (BP)have believed that I came forth from God. 28 (BQ)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.”
29 His disciples said to Him, “See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! 30 Now we are sure that (BR)You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this (BS)we believe that You came forth from God.”
31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 (BT)Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, (BU)each to his [h]own, and will leave Me alone. And (BV)yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that (BW)in Me you may have peace. (BX)In the world you [i]will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, (BY)I have overcome the world.”
Jesus Prays for Himself
17 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, (BZ)the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, 2 (CA)as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He [j]should give eternal life to as many (CB)as You have given Him. 3 And (CC)this is eternal life, that they may know You, (CD)the only true God, and Jesus Christ (CE)whom You have sent. 4 (CF)I have glorified You on the earth. (CG)I have finished the work (CH)which You have given Me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify Me together [k]with Yourself, with the glory (CI)which I had with You before the world was.
Jesus Prays for His Disciples
6 (CJ)“I have [l]manifested Your name to the men (CK)whom You have given Me out of the world. (CL)They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. 7 Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. 8 For I have given to them the words (CM)which You have given Me; and they have received them, (CN)and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that (CO)You sent Me.
9 “I pray for them. (CP)I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. 10 And all Mine are Yours, and (CQ)Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 (CR)Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, (CS)keep[m] through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one (CT)as We are. 12 While I was with them [n]in the world, (CU)I kept them in [o]Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and (CV)none of them is [p]lost (CW)except the son of [q]perdition, (CX)that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them Your word; (CY)and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, (CZ)just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but (DA)that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 (DB)Sanctify[r] them by Your truth. (DC)Your word is truth. 18 (DD)As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 And (DE)for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.
Jesus Prays for All Believers
20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who [s]will believe in Me through their word; 21 (DF)that they all may be one, as (DG)You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the (DH)glory which You gave Me I have given them, (DI)that they may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; (DJ)that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.
24 (DK)“Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; (DL)for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father! (DM)The world has not known You, but (DN)I have known You; and (DO)these have known that You sent Me. 26 (DP)And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love (DQ)with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”
Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(DR)
18 When Jesus had spoken these words, (DS)He went out with His disciples over (DT)the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. 2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; (DU)for Jesus often met there with His disciples. 3 (DV)Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 4 Jesus therefore, (DW)knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”
5 They answered Him, (DX)“Jesus [t]of Nazareth.”
Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who (DY)betrayed Him, also stood with them. 6 Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?”
And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” 9 that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, (DZ)“Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”
10 (EA)Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink (EB)the cup which My Father has given Me?”
Before the High Priest
12 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 And (EC)they led Him away to (ED)Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of (EE)Caiaphas who was high priest that year. 14 (EF)Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was [u]expedient that one man should die for the people.
Peter Denies Jesus(EG)
15 (EH)And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did (EI)another[v] disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 16 (EJ)But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. 17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?”
He said, “I am (EK)not.”
18 Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.
Jesus Questioned by the High Priest
19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.
20 Jesus answered him, (EL)“I spoke openly to the world. I always taught (EM)in synagogues and (EN)in the temple, where [w]the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask (EO)those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.”
22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by (EP)struck[x] Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?”
23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?”
24 (EQ)Then Annas sent Him bound to (ER)Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter Denies Twice More
25 Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. (ES)Therefore they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?”
He denied it and said, “I am not!”
26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied again; and (ET)immediately a rooster crowed.
In Pilate’s Court(EU)
28 (EV)Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. (EW)But they themselves did not go into the [y]Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. 29 (EX)Pilate then went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?”
30 They answered and said to him, “If He were not [z]an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you.”
31 Then Pilate said to them, “You take Him and judge Him according to your law.”
Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” 32 (EY)that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, (EZ)signifying by what death He would die.
33 (FA)Then Pilate entered the [aa]Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
34 Jesus answered him, “Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?”
35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?”
36 (FB)Jesus answered, (FC)“My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”
37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?”
Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, (FD)that I should bear (FE)witness to the truth. Everyone who (FF)is of the truth (FG)hears My voice.”
38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, (FH)“I find no fault in Him at all.
Taking the Place of Barabbas(FI)
39 (FJ)“But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
40 (FK)Then they all cried again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas!” (FL)Now Barabbas was a robber.

The Vine and the Branches
15 “I am(A) the true vine,(B) and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,(C) while every branch that does bear fruit(D) he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.(E) 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you.(F) No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;(G) apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.(H) 7 If you remain in me(I) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.(J) 8 This is to my Father’s glory,(K) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.(L)
9 “As the Father has loved me,(M) so have I loved you. The World Hates the Disciples
18 “If the world hates you,(Y) keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you(Z) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.(AA) 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[b](AB) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.(AC) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name,(AD) for they do not know the one who sent me.(AE) 22 If I had not come and spoken to them,(AF) they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.(AG) 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did,(AH) they would not be guilty of sin.(AI) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:(AJ) ‘They hated me without reason.’[c](AK)
The Work of the Holy Spirit
26 “When the Advocate(AL) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father(AM)—the Spirit of truth(AN) who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.(AO) 27 And you also must testify,(AP) for you have been with me from the beginning.(AQ)
16 “All this(AR) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(AS) 2 They will put you out of the synagogue;(AT) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(AU) 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(AV) 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(AW) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(AX) 5 but now I am going to him who sent me.(AY) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(AZ) 6 Rather, you are filled with grief(BA) because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(BB) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(BC) 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin,(BD) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(BE) because I am going to the Father,(BF) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(BG) now stands condemned.
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(BH) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(BI) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(BJ) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(BK) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy
16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while(BL) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”(BM)
17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’(BN) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”(BO) 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”
19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(BP) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(BQ) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(BR) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(BS) but I will see you again(BT) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(BU) 23 In that day(BV) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(BW) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(BX) and your joy will be complete.(BY)
25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(BZ) a time is coming(CA) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(CB) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(CC) and have believed that I came from God.(CD) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(CE)
29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(CF) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(CG) that you came from God.”(CH)
31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(CI) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(CJ) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(CK) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(CL)
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(CM) In this world you will have trouble.(CN) But take heart! I have overcome(CO) the world.”
Jesus Prays to Be Glorified
17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven(CP) and prayed:
“Father, the hour has come.(CQ) Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.(CR) 2 For you granted him authority over all people(CS) that he might give eternal life(CT) to all those you have given him.(CU) 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you,(CV) the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.(CW) 4 I have brought you glory(CX) on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.(CY) 5 And now, Father, glorify me(CZ) in your presence with the glory I had with you(DA) before the world began.(DB)
Jesus Prays for His Disciples
6 “I have revealed you[d](DC) to those whom you gave me(DD) out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me(DE) and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you,(DF) and they believed that you sent me.(DG) 9 I pray for them.(DH) I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me,(DI) for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.(DJ) And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world,(DK) and I am coming to you.(DL) Holy Father, protect them by the power of[e] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one(DM) as we are one.(DN) 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by[f] that name you gave me. None has been lost(DO) except the one doomed to destruction(DP) so that Scripture would be fulfilled.(DQ)
13 “I am coming to you now,(DR) but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy(DS) within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them,(DT) for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.(DU) 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.(DV) 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.(DW) 17 Sanctify them by[g] the truth; your word is truth.(DX) 18 As you sent me into the world,(DY) I have sent them into the world.(DZ) 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.(EA)
Jesus Prays for All Believers
20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one,(EB) Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.(EC) May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.(ED) 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me,(EE) that they may be one as we are one(EF)— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me(EG) and have loved them(EH) even as you have loved me.
24 “Father, I want those you have given me(EI) to be with me where I am,(EJ) and to see my glory,(EK) the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.(EL)
25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you,(EM) I know you, and they know that you have sent me.(EN) 26 I have made you[h] known to them,(EO) and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them(EP) and that I myself may be in them.”
Jesus Arrested(EQ)
18 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.(ER) On the other side there was a garden,(ES) and he and his disciples went into it.(ET)
2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.(EU) 3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding(EV) a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.(EW) They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him,(EX) went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”(EY)
5 “Jesus of Nazareth,”(EZ) they replied.
“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”(FA)
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”[i](FB)
10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)
11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup(FC) the Father has given me?”
12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials(FD) arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,(FE) the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.(FF)
Peter’s First Denial(FG)
15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,(FH) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,(FI) 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.
He replied, “I am not.”(FJ)
18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire(FK) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.(FL)
The High Priest Questions Jesus(FM)
19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues(FN) or at the temple,(FO) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.(FP) 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”
22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials(FQ) nearby slapped him in the face.(FR) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.
23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”(FS) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas(FT) the high priest.
Peter’s Second and Third Denials(FU)
25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself.(FV) So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”
He denied it, saying, “I am not.”(FW)
26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,(FX) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”(FY) 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.(FZ)
Jesus Before Pilate(GA)
28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.(GB) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,(GC) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.(GD) 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”
“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.(GE)
33 Pilate then went back inside the palace,(GF) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(GG)
34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus said, “My kingdom(GH) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.(GI) But now my kingdom is from another place.”(GJ)
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(GK) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”(GL)
38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.(GM) 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.(GN)
