Spies Sent into Canaan
13 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 (A)“Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel. From each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a chief among them.” 3 So Moses sent them from (B)the wilderness of Paran, according to the command of the Lord, all of them men who were heads of the people of Israel. 4 And these were their names: From the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur; 5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori; 6 (C)from the tribe of Judah, (D)Caleb the son of Jephunneh; 7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph; 8 from the tribe of Ephraim, (E)Hoshea the son of Nun; 9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu; 10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi; 11 from the tribe of Joseph (that is, from the tribe of Manasseh), Gaddi the son of Susi; 12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli; 13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael; 14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi; 15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi. 16 These were the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called (F)Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.
17 Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, “Go up into (G)the Negeb and go up into (H)the hill country, 18 and see what the land is, and whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many, 19 and whether the land that they dwell in is good or bad, and whether the cities that they dwell in are camps or strongholds, 20 and whether the land is (I)rich or poor, and whether there are trees in it or not. (J)Be of good courage and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes.
21 So they went up and spied out the land (K)from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, (L)near Lebo-hamath. 22 They went up into (M)the Negeb and came to (N)Hebron. (O)Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the (P)descendants of Anak, were there. ((Q)Hebron was built seven years before (R)Zoan in Egypt.) 23 And (S)they came to the Valley of Eshcol and cut down from there a branch with a single cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a pole between two of them; they also brought some pomegranates and figs. 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshcol,[a] because of the cluster that the people of Israel cut down from there.
Report of the Spies
25 At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. 26 And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at (T)Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It (U)flows with milk and honey, (V)and this is its fruit. 28 (W)However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 (X)The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. (Y)And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.”
30 But (Z)Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” 31 (AA)Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” 32 So (AB)they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and (AC)all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33 And there we saw the (AD)Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the (AE)Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves (AF)like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”
The People Rebel
14 Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people (AG)wept that night. 2 And all the people of Israel (AH)grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or (AI)would that we had died in this wilderness! 3 Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? (AJ)Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” 4 And they said to one another, (AK)“Let us choose a leader and (AL)go back to Egypt.”
5 Then (AM)Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel. 6 (AN)And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes 7 and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, (AO)“The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. 8 If (AP)the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, (AQ)a land that flows with milk and honey. 9 Only (AR)do not rebel against the Lord. And (AS)do not fear the people of the land, for (AT)they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.” 10 (AU)Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But (AV)the glory of the Lord appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.
11 And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will this people (AW)despise me? And how long will they not (AX)believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them? 12 I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I (AY)will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”
Moses Intercedes for the People
13 But (AZ)Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them, 14 and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. (BA)They have heard that you, O Lord, are in the midst of this people. For you, O Lord, are seen face to face, and (BB)your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say, 16 ‘It is because the Lord (BC)was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’ 17 And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying, 18 (BD)‘The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, (BE)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’ 19 Please (BF)pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just (BG)as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.”
God Promises Judgment
20 Then the Lord said, “I have pardoned, (BH)according to your word. 21 But truly, as I live, and as all (BI)the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord, 22 (BJ)none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these (BK)ten times and have not obeyed my voice, 23 (BL)shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. 24 But my servant (BM)Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has (BN)followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. 25 (BO)Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, (BP)turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.”
26 And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 27 “How long shall (BQ)this wicked congregation grumble against me? (BR)I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me. 28 Say to them, (BS)‘As I live, declares the Lord, (BT)what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: 29 (BU)your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and (BV)of all your number, listed in the census (BW)from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, 30 not one shall come into the land where I (BX)swore that I would make you dwell, (BY)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 (BZ)But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that (CA)you have rejected. 32 But as for you, (CB)your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. 33 And your children (CC)shall be shepherds in the wilderness (CD)forty years and shall (CE)suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 (CF)According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, (CG)forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’ 35 (CH)I, the Lord, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all (CI)this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.”
36 (CJ)And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing up a bad report about the land— 37 the men who brought up a bad report of the land—(CK)died by plague before the Lord. 38 Of those men who went to spy out the land, (CL)only Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive.
Israel Defeated in Battle
39 When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people (CM)mourned greatly. 40 And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, (CN)“Here we are. We will go up to the place that the Lord has promised, for we have sinned.” 41 (CO)But Moses said, “Why now are you transgressing the command of the Lord, when that will not succeed? 42 (CP)Do not go up, (CQ)for the Lord is not among you, lest you be struck down before your enemies. 43 For there (CR)the Amalekites and the Canaanites are facing you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.” 44 (CS)But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither (CT)the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses departed out of the camp. 45 Then (CU)the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and defeated them and pursued them, even to (CV)Hormah.
Laws About Sacrifices
15 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, (CW)When you come into the land you are to inhabit, which I am giving you, 3 and (CX)you offer to the Lord from the herd or from the flock a food offering[b] or a burnt offering or a sacrifice, (CY)to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering or (CZ)at your appointed feasts, to make a (DA)pleasing aroma to the Lord, 4 then (DB)he who brings his offering shall offer to the Lord (DC)a grain offering of a tenth of an ephah[c] of fine flour, (DD)mixed with a quarter of a hin[d] of oil; 5 and you shall offer with the burnt offering, or for the sacrifice, a quarter of a hin of (DE)wine for the drink offering for each lamb. 6 (DF)Or for a ram, you shall offer for a grain offering two tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with a third of a hin of oil. 7 And for the drink offering you shall offer a third of a hin of wine, a (DG)pleasing aroma to the Lord. 8 And when you offer a bull as a burnt offering or sacrifice, to (DH)fulfill a vow or for (DI)peace offerings to the Lord, 9 then one shall offer (DJ)with the bull a grain offering of three tenths of an ephah of fine flour, mixed with half a hin of oil. 10 And you shall offer for the drink offering half a hin of wine, as a food offering, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.
11 (DK)“Thus it shall be done for each bull or ram, or for each lamb or young goat. 12 As many as you offer, so shall you do with each one, as many as there are. 13 Every native Israelite shall do these things in this way, in offering a food offering, with a pleasing aroma to the Lord. 14 And if a stranger is sojourning with you, or anyone is living permanently among you, and he wishes to offer a food offering, with a pleasing aroma to the Lord, he shall do as you do. 15 For the assembly, (DL)there shall be one statute for you and for the stranger who sojourns with you, a statute forever throughout your generations. You and the sojourner shall be alike before the Lord. 16 One law and one rule shall be for you and for the stranger who sojourns with you.”
17 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 18 (DM)“Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land to which I bring you 19 and when you eat of (DN)the bread of the land, you shall present a contribution to the Lord. 20 (DO)Of the first of your dough you shall present a loaf as a contribution; like a (DP)contribution from the threshing floor, so shall you present it. 21 (DQ)Some of the first of your dough you shall give to the Lord as a contribution throughout your generations.
Laws About Unintentional Sins
22 (DR)“But if you sin unintentionally,[e] and do not observe all these commandments that the Lord has spoken to Moses, 23 all that the Lord has commanded you by Moses, from the day that the Lord gave commandment, and onward throughout your generations, 24 then if it was done unintentionally (DS)without the knowledge of the congregation, all the congregation shall offer one bull from the herd for a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma to the Lord, (DT)with its grain offering and its drink offering, according to the rule, and (DU)one male goat for a sin offering. 25 (DV)And the priest shall make atonement for all the congregation of the people of Israel, and they shall be forgiven, because it was a mistake, and they have brought their offering, a food offering to the Lord, and their sin offering before the Lord for their mistake. 26 And all the congregation of the people of Israel shall be forgiven, and the stranger who sojourns among them, because the whole population was involved in the mistake.
27 (DW)“If one person sins unintentionally, he shall offer a female goat a year old for a sin offering. 28 (DX)And the priest shall make atonement before the Lord for the person who makes a mistake, when he sins unintentionally, to make atonement for him, and he shall be forgiven. 29 (DY)You shall have one law for him who does anything unintentionally, for him who is native among the people of Israel and for the stranger who sojourns among them. 30 (DZ)But the person who does anything with a high hand, whether he is native or a sojourner, reviles the Lord, and that person shall be cut off from among his people. 31 Because he has (EA)despised the word of the Lord and has broken his commandment, that person shall be utterly cut off; his iniquity shall be on him.”
A Sabbathbreaker Executed
32 While the people of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man (EB)gathering sticks on the Sabbath day. 33 And those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation. 34 (EC)They put him in custody, because it had not been made clear what should be done to him. 35 And the Lord said to Moses, (ED)“The man shall be put to death; all the congregation shall (EE)stone him with stones outside the camp.” 36 And all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him to death with stones, as the Lord commanded Moses.
Tassels on Garments
37 The Lord said to Moses, 38 “Speak to the people of Israel, and tell them to (EF)make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a cord of blue on the tassel of each corner. 39 And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the Lord, to do them, (EG)not to follow[f] after your own heart and your own eyes, which you are inclined (EH)to whore after. 40 So you shall remember and do all my commandments, and be (EI)holy to your God. 41 (EJ)I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God: I am the Lord your God.”

Exploring Canaan
13 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Send some men to explore(A) the land of Canaan,(B) which I am giving to the Israelites.(C) From each ancestral tribe(D) send one of its leaders.”
3 So at the Lord’s command Moses sent them out from the Desert of Paran. All of them were leaders of the Israelites.(E) 4 These are their names:
from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zakkur;
5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;
6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;(F)
7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;
8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;(G)
9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;
10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;
11 from the tribe of Manasseh (a tribe of Joseph), Gaddi son of Susi;
12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli;
13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;
14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;
15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Maki.
16 These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore(H) the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun(I) the name Joshua.)(J)
17 When Moses sent them to explore Canaan,(K) he said, “Go up through the Negev(L) and on into the hill country.(M) 18 See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. 19 What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? 20 How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees in it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land.(N)” (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.)(O)
21 So they went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin(P) as far as Rehob,(Q) toward Lebo Hamath.(R) 22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron,(S) where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai,(T) the descendants of Anak,(U) lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)(V) 23 When they reached the Valley of Eshkol,[a](W) they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates(X) and figs.(Y) 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshkol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. 25 At the end of forty days(Z) they returned from exploring the land.(AA)
Report on the Exploration
26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh(AB) in the Desert of Paran.(AC) There they reported to them(AD) and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land.(AE) 27 They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey!(AF) Here is its fruit.(AG) 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large.(AH) We even saw descendants of Anak(AI) there.(AJ) 29 The Amalekites(AK) live in the Negev; the Hittites,(AL) Jebusites(AM) and Amorites(AN) live in the hill country;(AO) and the Canaanites(AP) live near the sea and along the Jordan.(AQ)”
30 Then Caleb(AR) silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”
31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”(AS) 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report(AT) about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours(AU) those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.(AV) 33 We saw the Nephilim(AW) there (the descendants of Anak(AX) come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers(AY) in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”
The People Rebel
14 That night all the members of the community raised their voices and wept aloud.(AZ) 2 All the Israelites grumbled(BA) against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, “If only we had died in Egypt!(BB) Or in this wilderness!(BC) 3 Why is the Lord bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword?(BD) Our wives and children(BE) will be taken as plunder.(BF) Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?(BG)” 4 And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.(BH)”
5 Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown(BI) in front of the whole Israelite assembly(BJ) gathered there. 6 Joshua son of Nun(BK) and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes(BL) 7 and said to the entire Israelite assembly, “The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.(BM) 8 If the Lord is pleased with us,(BN) he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey,(BO) and will give it to us.(BP) 9 Only do not rebel(BQ) against the Lord. And do not be afraid(BR) of the people of the land,(BS) because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with(BT) us.(BU) Do not be afraid of them.”(BV)
10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning(BW) them. Then the glory of the Lord(BX) appeared at the tent of meeting to all the Israelites. 11 The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt?(BY) How long will they refuse to believe in me,(BZ) in spite of all the signs(CA) I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague(CB) and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation(CC) greater and stronger than they.”(CD)
13 Moses said to the Lord, “Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them.(CE) 14 And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard(CF) that you, Lord, are with these people(CG) and that you, Lord, have been seen face to face,(CH) that your cloud stays over them,(CI) and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.(CJ) 15 If you put all these people to death, leaving none alive, the nations who have heard this report about you will say, 16 ‘The Lord was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath,(CK) so he slaughtered them in the wilderness.’(CL)
17 “Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 18 ‘The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion.(CM) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.’(CN) 19 In accordance with your great love, forgive(CO) the sin of these people,(CP) just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.”(CQ)
20 The Lord replied, “I have forgiven them,(CR) as you asked. 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live(CS) and as surely as the glory of the Lord(CT) fills the whole earth,(CU) 22 not one of those who saw my glory and the signs(CV) I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times(CW)— 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath(CX) to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt(CY) will ever see it.(CZ) 24 But because my servant Caleb(DA) has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly,(DB) I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.(DC) 25 Since the Amalekites(DD) and the Canaanites(DE) are living in the valleys, turn(DF) back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.[b](DG)”
26 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 27 “How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.(DH) 28 So tell them, ‘As surely as I live,(DI) declares the Lord, I will do to you(DJ) the very thing I heard you say: 29 In this wilderness your bodies will fall(DK)—every one of you twenty years old or more(DL) who was counted in the census(DM) and who has grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land(DN) I swore with uplifted hand(DO) to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh(DP) and Joshua son of Nun.(DQ) 31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.(DR) 32 But as for you, your bodies will fall(DS) in this wilderness. 33 Your children will be shepherds here for forty years,(DT) suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 For forty years(DU)—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land(DV)—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’ 35 I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will surely do these things(DW) to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die.(DX)”
36 So the men Moses had sent(DY) to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble(DZ) against him by spreading a bad report(EA) about it— 37 these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report(EB) about the land were struck down and died of a plague(EC) before the Lord. 38 Of the men who went to explore the land,(ED) only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.(EE)
39 When Moses reported this(EF) to all the Israelites, they mourned(EG) bitterly. 40 Early the next morning they set out for the highest point in the hill country,(EH) saying, “Now we are ready to go up to the land the Lord promised. Surely we have sinned!(EI)”
41 But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed!(EJ) 42 Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,(EK) 43 for the Amalekites(EL) and the Canaanites(EM) will face you there. Because you have turned away from the Lord, he will not be with you(EN) and you will fall by the sword.”
44 Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up(EO) toward the highest point in the hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the Lord’s covenant moved from the camp.(EP) 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites(EQ) who lived in that hill country(ER) came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.(ES)
Supplementary Offerings
15 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘After you enter the land I am giving you(ET) as a home 3 and you present to the Lord food offerings from the herd or the flock,(EU) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord(EV)—whether burnt offerings(EW) or sacrifices, for special vows or freewill offerings(EX) or festival offerings(EY)— 4 then the person who brings an offering shall present to the Lord a grain offering(EZ) of a tenth of an ephah[c] of the finest flour(FA) mixed with a quarter of a hin[d] of olive oil. 5 With each lamb(FB) for the burnt offering or the sacrifice, prepare a quarter of a hin of wine(FC) as a drink offering.(FD)
6 “‘With a ram(FE) prepare a grain offering(FF) of two-tenths of an ephah[e](FG) of the finest flour mixed with a third of a hin[f] of olive oil,(FH) 7 and a third of a hin of wine(FI) as a drink offering.(FJ) Offer it as an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(FK)
8 “‘When you prepare a young bull(FL) as a burnt offering or sacrifice, for a special vow(FM) or a fellowship offering(FN) to the Lord, 9 bring with the bull a grain offering(FO) of three-tenths of an ephah[g](FP) of the finest flour mixed with half a hin[h] of olive oil, 10 and also bring half a hin of wine(FQ) as a drink offering.(FR) This will be a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(FS) 11 Each bull or ram, each lamb or young goat, is to be prepared in this manner. 12 Do this for each one, for as many as you prepare.(FT)
13 “‘Everyone who is native-born(FU) must do these things in this way when they present a food offering as an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(FV) 14 For the generations to come,(FW) whenever a foreigner(FX) or anyone else living among you presents a food(FY) offering(FZ) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord, they must do exactly as you do. 15 The community is to have the same rules for you and for the foreigner residing among you; this is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.(GA) You and the foreigner shall be the same before the Lord: 16 The same laws and regulations will apply both to you and to the foreigner residing among you.(GB)’”
17 The Lord said to Moses, 18 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you enter the land to which I am taking you(GC) 19 and you eat the food of the land,(GD) present a portion as an offering to the Lord.(GE) 20 Present a loaf from the first of your ground meal(GF) and present it as an offering from the threshing floor.(GG) 21 Throughout the generations to come(GH) you are to give this offering to the Lord from the first of your ground meal.(GI)
Offerings for Unintentional Sins
22 “‘Now if you as a community unintentionally fail to keep any of these commands the Lord gave Moses(GJ)— 23 any of the Lord’s commands to you through him, from the day the Lord gave them and continuing through the generations to come(GK)— 24 and if this is done unintentionally(GL) without the community being aware of it,(GM) then the whole community is to offer a young bull for a burnt offering(GN) as an aroma pleasing to the Lord,(GO) along with its prescribed grain offering(GP) and drink offering,(GQ) and a male goat for a sin offering.[i](GR) 25 The priest is to make atonement for the whole Israelite community, and they will be forgiven,(GS) for it was not intentional(GT) and they have presented to the Lord for their wrong a food offering(GU) and a sin offering.(GV) 26 The whole Israelite community and the foreigners residing among them will be forgiven, because all the people were involved in the unintentional wrong.(GW)
27 “‘But if just one person sins unintentionally,(GX) that person must bring a year-old female goat for a sin offering.(GY) 28 The priest is to make atonement(GZ) before the Lord for the one who erred by sinning unintentionally, and when atonement has been made, that person will be forgiven.(HA) 29 One and the same law applies to everyone who sins unintentionally, whether a native-born Israelite or a foreigner residing among you.(HB)
30 “‘But anyone who sins defiantly,(HC) whether native-born or foreigner,(HD) blasphemes the Lord(HE) and must be cut off from the people of Israel.(HF) 31 Because they have despised(HG) the Lord’s word and broken his commands,(HH) they must surely be cut off; their guilt remains on them.(HI)’”
The Sabbath-Breaker Put to Death
32 While the Israelites were in the wilderness,(HJ) a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day.(HK) 33 Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly, 34 and they kept him in custody, because it was not clear what should be done to him.(HL) 35 Then the Lord said to Moses, “The man must die.(HM) The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp.(HN)” 36 So the assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him(HO) to death,(HP) as the Lord commanded Moses.(HQ)
Tassels on Garments
37 The Lord said to Moses, 38 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Throughout the generations to come(HR) you are to make tassels on the corners of your garments,(HS) with a blue cord on each tassel. 39 You will have these tassels to look at and so you will remember(HT) all the commands of the Lord, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves(HU) by chasing after the lusts of your own hearts(HV) and eyes. 40 Then you will remember to obey all my commands(HW) and will be consecrated to your God.(HX) 41 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt to be your God.(HY) I am the Lord your God.(HZ)’”
